The problem: spent - but far from useless - malt is going into the garbage. The solution: we get the tasty, nutritious stuff to farmers.
Our goal is to connect Ontario micro-brewers with Ontario farmers. We want the brewers' spent malt to get to the farmers.
Why? Because waste is a sin. Because malt is good feed. And because it feels great to see farmers and brewers working together. It's just the right thing to do.
But it's not as easy at it sounds.
Spent malt is sweet stuff, for about the first couple of days. After that, not so much. So, what we're up against is a short shelf-life. And micro-brewers tend to be tight on space. That's hurdle number one.
Hurdle number two: farmers tend to be far outside the city and brewers tend to be closer to town, which means, someone has to do some back and forth every week. Happily, this shouldn't be an insurmountable problem, as many farmers do come into town on a weekly basis to sell their produce at markets or make deliveries to restaurants. But, as with most things in life, timing is everything!
So, what we need to do is get folks talking; farmers and brewers. We hope you'll do that here! Consider us your personal matchmaker.
Another viable solution is to get brewers to meet farmers somewhere in the middle, say at a farmers' market. So we'll be working on those connections too.
The vision: A network of farmers and brewers, oh, and bakers too, throughout Ontario, sharing and exchanging.
Calling all bakers! Spent malt is a great, crunchy addition to breads.
